Mark Smith

Innovative Educator, President Elect Jamaica Teachers Association

Mark Smith is currently the Headmaster of Munro College and President Elect of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association. He assumed leadership of Munro College in July 2015. Mark led Munro College’s turnaround stabilizing the school’s academic and financial position, ensuring its viability, and pivoting its programming from a traditional grammar school type curriculum to more diverse academic offerings with a number of partnerships with the government and private educational institutions, to offer courses ranging from mechatronics and robotics to surgical technicians. Today the school takes advantage of the current growth opportunities in non-traditional programmes. At Munro College he worked tirelessly with the teachers and students to lead an academic turnaround of the institution and achieved a top ten placement from a 22 second place in the Educate Jamaica Secondary school academic rankings.

Mark is a distinguished educational leader and has a proven record as a leadership practitioner with over 23 years experience in education and management. Prior to joining the Munro College family, Mark served as an education officer with the Ministry of Education and Youth. He has served at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of the education system.

Recognized as a thought leader and as a respected voice in educational policy, Mark has been a voice advocating for improvements in funding for education, structural reforms of the sector as well as leveraging technology to improve educational outcomes. In 2023, he ran unopposed and was subsequently confirmed as the president elect of the JTA only the third time in the 60 year history of the organization.

Mark graduated from the Mico College with a diploma in education ( Visual Arts), he also attended IUC where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counselling. Mark also has a master’s degree in education from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota. He is presently a doctoral candidate at Temple University. Mark has also received numerous awards, most notably from the Jamaica Teaching Council ( JTC), Munro College, and the in 2022 received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Education.

Mark serves on the Board of Directors, as Vice Chairman for the Munro Prep School (2015-present). Mark serves as a consultant for several private sector companies. He is also active in the non-profit community, and is a member of the Y’s Men Association.

He is happily married with two amazing children. Mark is also an avid gearhead and motorsports fan.
